If it feels like the search and social landscape has been flipped on its head lately, you’re not wrong. Between AI reshaping how platforms deliver content and users relying more on social platforms for search, the rules of engagement are shifting fast.
In this week’s episode of Geekspeak, Rina from Liddleworks Indie Media and Pip from Seymour Digital Media broke down what’s changing, how it affects small businesses, and what you need to be doing right now to stay visible.
It started with TikTok: younger users began using it as a search engine instead of Google. Now, Instagram is following suit, with Reels even starting to show up in Google search results. While Meta’s Facebook isn’t quite there yet, its algorithm has undergone a considerable change.
Meta now favours discovery content. Instead of showing posts to your existing followers, its AI-powered algorithm serves your content to people who don’t follow you—but whose interests align with what you’re posting.
If you’re wondering whether influencers still need followers, the answer is nuanced. While some metrics still matter in brand deals, savvy influencers know how to combine ad spend, content performance, and engagement insights.
Instagram is proving especially valuable right now if you’re using content-forward hashtags. Rina noted that Instagram posts are reaching more non-followers than TikTok lately, but each platform demands a slightly different approach.
The takeaway: check your Insights. See what’s getting traction with non-followers and test what worked—was it the visual? The caption? Your presence in the video? The hashtags?
Social search is more than searching within apps—it’s about showing up in Google search results through your social presence. Instagram Reels are beginning to surface in search engine results pages (SERPs), while TikTok still isn’t quite integrated there.
Still, it’s worth optimizing your social content as if it will show up in search.
Pro Tip: Fill out your Google Business Profile FAQs—these now connect directly with your reviews and show up in relevant local searches. Update them quarterly to stay fresh and capture more visibility.
We’re moving into an AI-driven era of search where “AEO” (Answer Engine Optimization) is taking the spotlight. Google is rolling out its AI-powered search experience, which means:
If your content can answer a user’s question directly in search, you win.
Yes, even FAQ schema is making a comeback—despite Google previously deprecating its influence. Pip recommends using full FAQ pages with proper schema markup as well as inserting FAQs on other pages like About or Services, where relevant.
✔ Start testing AI-optimized strategies now.
✔ Don’t abandon SEO, but reimagine how it works.
✔ Consider re-investing in FAQ schema and optimizing for snippets.
✔ Think omnichannel: your Instagram, Reels, Google Business, and website all feed the same ecosystem.
And most importantly, focus on your customers’ journey, not your company’s. Your website content should reflect the problems you solve for the visitor, not the story of how you started your business.
While AI can create content, it can’t yet understand your customer like you can. That’s your competitive edge.
