What is the Metaverse?

Goodbye Facebook, Hello Metaverse!

UPDATED: June 6, 2022

Let’s start off by asking,

What is the Metaverse?

Well, Metaverse is an immersive 3D experience that utilizes a combination of various elements, that can include virtual reality and/or augmented reality that is being built by Facebook.

So, what can you expect with the Metaverse?

We don’t know the specifics yet, just the concepts. What we do know is that Meta (formerly known as Facebook) is planning on providing an immersive, social platform where we can experience things virtually, with other people, so rather than meeting on Zoom and experiencing meetings in real life mediated with a 2D computer screen, we’ll be able to have a 3D experience with people physically in other places.

How will the Metaverse transpire?

Facebook has been spending a lot of time and money on improving the tools for groups. We are thinking that groups will be the first spaces to have the tools to get into this virtual space, as they already have the audiences built around interests, which makes it a natural transition for these virtual experiences.

Now while experts anticipate rapid metaverse growth in the near future, Toptal, however, predicts that the Metaverse won’t go mainstream for 3-5 years.

Why is this? Well, the existing metaverse platforms still being small in scale, and the quality of graphics & user experience is fairly poor, due in part to the limitations of graphics in today’s VR headsets & phones.

Why should small businesses care about the Metaverse?

Simple. Instead of boring Zoom meetings, where our senses completely bump up against a screen, we can have meetings in virtual spaces that surround and fool our senses. We can be transported into a virtual room or a place that already exists across the planet, and meet with people on the other side of the world!

Think virtual tours, showrooms, conferences, and demos, all in a space where you can hand things over to someone else. Instead of scrolling past 2D ads, products can be placed, touched, tried – experienced – and then purchased.

This could eliminate flying to conferences, or traveling for sales demos.

No META what you call it, our world is evolving, which is making us connect in new and innovative ways.
